Hydroponics
HYDRO, SOIL or COCO ?
INDOOR GARDENING
For centuries people have cultivated herbs, vegetables, flowers and
all types of plant known to man outdoors.
WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO BRING YOUR GARDEN INDOORS ?
Having total control is the answer, we simply recreate the great
outdoors, indoors.
Using HID (high intensity discharge) lighting and timers to control
the amount of light and hours of light given to plants in
replacement of sunlight.
Controlling the indoor environment to set temperatures with a supply
of fresh air and expelling hot, stale air from the grow room using
fans and ducting, and in the grow room an air circulating fan helps
provide good air circulation amongst the plants, good air movement
is of the highest importance to produce high yielding quality crops.
Having total control to the amount of nutrients fed to your plants
at all times.
All this put together and managed correctly will result in extremely
fast growth and will also give the grower outstanding yields, as
plants are receiving all elements required for their full potential.
Best of all the time of year is not relevant for indoor cultivation.
HYDROPONICS
Hydroponics is an art of cultivating plants in water without any
soil.
Quite simply there is no soil involved so you would use a growing
medium that is an inert (chemically inactive, no nutritional
content) medium, there are several types of inert growing mediums
used in hydroponics, the most commonly used is Grodan rockwool.
Hydroponic growing medium also provides good aeration to the
rootzone of the plant which is one of the reasons it can be such a
quick process. With the medium having no risk of pests or diseases
it makes an excellent choice for cultivation. Most hydro systems are
designed to recirculate the nutrient solution, a good design as
water is not wasted, or if desired they can be set up as a run to
waste system.
SOIL
An old favourite of many is soil, and in recent years a lot of hydro
growers have switched to organic soils over rumours of a better
taste. I’ve always found if flushed correctly hydro compared to soil
can taste just as good, but with hydro I’ve received far greater
yields in a shorter time. Nowadays there are some excellent organic
soils and nutrients available which can give the grower good results
in yield and taste.
COCO
Another growing medium which is also becoming very popular is coco.
The husks of the coconut are used to produce the coco growing
medium, plants can be cultivated in coco and fed specific coco
nutrients giving some very good results. In Holland it is a very
popular method for indoor cultivation and I’m sure it will become in
England over time. Canna is one company who have developed a coco
range (medium, nutrient & boost) and has proven to be a leader in
the coco hydroponics market from the outset.
Which ever method you choose, HYDRO, SOIL, COCO for your
indoor garden will give you good results if managed correctly, but
for me I just cant be converted to soil or coco, the time taken and
yield possible with hydro just keeps me hooked. |
