Flood and Drain 4 Pot System

Flood and Drain is a very popular method for hydroponics cultivation. It is a simple yet very effective design that delivers some great results.

The GS Flood and Drain 4 Pot is a plug and play design that can accommodate four large plants or eight small plants. Clay pebbles are the growing media used as they allow plenty of oxygen into the root zone, ensure to clean pebbles thoroughly before use. Each grow pot requires 18 litres of clay pebbles, and when flooding each grow pot requires seven litres of water.

Water and nutrients are stored in the 40 litre tank, and a maxi jet pump will deliver the water and nutrient through the pipe work that is connected to the bottom of each grow pot. This will flood each pot, covering the media and roots with water and nutrient. At the top of each grow pot is an overflow pipe to prevent the pots completely filling and spilling onto the floor, making it possible for the pump to run continuous and the system to re-circulate all water and nutrient. We need the system to drain, so the pump is placed onto a segmental timer to control the flood times, no expensive timing equipment is required for this system to flood and drain.

Grow pots are raised above the tank on moulded pot stands which are sloped to aid drainage. When the pump is turned off, gravity will simply drain the system and empty each grow pot of all water and nutrient, which returns to the main tank. As the system drains and water is emptied from each pot, it will draw large amounts of oxygen into the media and root zone of the plant. This process of flooding the grow pots and draining them is repeated several times during the light period, allowing plant roots access to plenty of air, water and nutrient.
